Education Reform Debated

In his commentary titled "Presidential Candidates Shun Education Issue," Chamber President and CEO Tom Donohue called on the candidates to be "agents of change" when it comes to the nation's K-12 education system. His opinions generated a large reader response on www.uschambermagazine.com.

"The sad truth is that our presidential candidates don't have a solution to the problem of public school education. There is no 'quick fix' for an institution that has become dysfunctional. …"
-Kay Andrews
Chattanooga, Tennessee

"All the candidates have talked about education reform. The Democrats and McCain have stated that the states need to put more money and effort into the schools. …"
-Paul Smith
Williams, Arizona

"National government should not have the lion's share of impact on education-a function which belongs to the states and individuals. The national government can create an environment for better education but cannot do what the other levels of government should be doing."
-Stephen Mattia
St. Marys, Kansas

"I truly believe that the education dilemma is a much more complex problem than any have stated thus far. I believe the majority of the blame should be placed on the parents. Let's start holding the parents responsible for their children."
-Mark C. Turner, Navarre
Florida
