Donohue, Chavern Lead the Way on Transportation, Infrastructure
In separate speeches before key stakeholders this week, Chamber President and CEO Tom Donohue and Senior Vice President and COO David Chavern highlighted the economic and competitive benefits of strong transportation and infrastructure systems and called for a national plan to address the issue.
On May 9, Donohue joined industry and business experts and key lawmakers in Washington D.C. at a national forum on infrastructure investment. Donohue’s speech at the Rebuilding and Renewing America focused on the transportation and energy challenges of the 21st century and the business case for a national infrastructure plan. “Everything we do to be competitive depends on our infrastructure,” Donohue said. “We’re going to convince the Congress, the next president, the state legislators, and the American people that we better fix our country’s infrastructure if we’re going to keep this economy moving forward.”
In Pittsburgh on May 8, Chavern participated in the Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce’s Voice of Business Tour and outlined the Chamber’s most recent efforts to update and improve America’s highways, railways, waterways and bridges. Chavern also spoke on the need for more funding from every resource, including additional public funding, and public-private partnerships. “Unlike with other challenges, we can't wait until the very last minute and then write a big check to immediately fix our infrastructure,” Chavern said.
The U.S. Chamber is ramping up its efforts to educate and rally the business community around infrastructure challenges and opportunities and to reach out to like-minded groups to come up with a solution to this critical issue.
