The following reports are focused on K-12 education.

To the former National Governors Association (NGA) Chair, Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, 2007 has been the year of Innovation. For her NGA Chair's initiative, she launched Innovation America to promote innovation in each state and across the nation. "To be competitive as a nation, we must prepare our young people to meet the real demands of the job market," said Gov. Napolitano.
ICW has forged a new partnership with Governor Napolitano. To support her work, we have just released Innovation America: A Public-Private Partnership. This new publication is a guide for business on how to work with state leaders to support and promote innovation at the regional and state levels. Governor Napolitano has spent the year working with other Governors to help them understand how they can implement policies and programs that will foster innovation in their states. Her Chairmanship has ended, but she will continue her work through the Innovation America Foundation. The report includes a 10 point list for business engagement in innovation and specific examples of how different states have implemented innovation initiatives. Corporations, Chambers and Charters: How Business Can Support High Quality Public Charter Schools Read the Executive Summary online (PDF, Fall 2007)
Coming in winter of 2008, ICW will release a new publication, Corporations, Chambers and Charters: How Business Can Support High Quality Public Charter Schools. This report builds on A Joint Platform for Education Reform. The Platform calls for the implementation of innovative education models such as charter schools—but only if these institutions are held accountable for academic results. Public charter schools have been around since 1992 and now operate in 40 states and the District of Columbia. Today, more than 4,000 public charter schools serve over one million students.
This guide will help businesses think more strategically about how to achieve significant results in public education reform and how to support charter schools at the local, state, and national levels. It will showcase ways in which businesses can support high-quality charter schools. It will focus on five areas:
-
Building the supply of schools
-
Building human capital
-
Addressing operational challenges
-
Improving quality control
-
Forging charter-friendly public policies
This guide was created in partnership with Public Impact and the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools.

This new study grades the performance of the 50 states and Washington, DC on their K-12 school systems. In a state-by-state assessment of education systems, we found there is not a single state in the country where a majority of students are proficient in reading or math. One-third of all 9th graders will not graduate in four years--almost half of all minority students will not. At least 40% of our students enrolling in college have to take at least one remedial course when they get there.
