Institute Faculty
SPOTLIGHT ON...
Shannon Skousgaard, Ph.D.
1. How are you currently involved with Institute?
I've been teaching Ethics, Leadership and a variety of other courses since 1980.
2. What would be your ideal location for Institute and why?
A retreat area, with good beds and food, where faculty and participants could work and talk together.
3. What do you like most about volunteering at Institute?
I now only serve as a paid instructor. I have, however, volunteered hundreds of hours across many years serving the Curriculum Committee, the Board of Trustees, and as a Faculty Chair for curriculum. Serving those positions enabled me to participate in structuring one of the best education programs I had ever encountered. It was an honor to work with the participants, Regents, and Trustees to maintain excellence in that program.
4. What is your favorite course at Institute? Why?
I love the Ethics and Leadership courses equally. Sorry I can't pick one. Both these courses give participants an opportunity to step back from the emphasis on training and how-to courses and delve deeply into the meaning and purpose of our professional lives.
5. What is your profession when not involved with Institute?
I am a professor of philosophy at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.
6. In your free time, what do you do for fun?
I travel, collect folk art, read, watch films, and most wonderful of all I play with my rambunctious grandchildren.
7. What are some of your favorites?
I love tapestry~it's so local, so expressive of the individual artist. And it's useful art. Molas, panchos, batiks.
Because I read head-cracking stuff for both teaching and consulting, I enjoy fiction and film. Someone else does the work and I enjoy the results. Recent books: The Kite Runner; The Historian; City of Falling Angels; and I'm reading all of Alan Furst's work. Recent films: I've recently enjoyed Babette's Feast; In America; Diary of a Country Priest; Second-hand Lions; In This House of Brede.
8. If you could vacation in any spot in the world, where would it be? Why?
Italy~ the land itself seems to call one to holiness and wholeness. Ireland ~ my wet, rain, green, Celtic homeland.
9. Where do you live?
Reston, Virginia, but no, I'm not organic.
10. Anything else you would like to share?
You've been very thorough.
11. Do you have a website where we could read more about you?
