Policy and Advocacy: Korea
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce supports policies designed to augment trade and investment ties between the United States and Korea. The Chamber conducts its Korea policy initiatives through the U.S.-Korea Business Council, of which it serves as secretariat. The Council is the leading organization in Washington D.C. advancing U.S. business interests in Korea and it regularly appeals to the U.S. and Korean governments to takes steps to strengthen the bilateral commercial relationship.
Policy & Advocacy Goals for 2007
- Secure congressional approval of the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement, which represents a breakthrough opportunity to ensure market access and fair competition for U.S. companies operating in Korea by eliminating tariff barriers and burdensome regulations that have impeded U.S.-Korea trade and investment from realizing its full potential.
- Promote a globally competitive business environment in Korea through greater labor market flexibility, increased regulatory transparency and predictability, and a fair and level playing field for trade and investment.
- Work with Korean business organizations on shared policy priorities at the global level, including the World Trade Organization's Doha Development Round and intellectual property rights protection and enforcement.
- Support Korea's inclusion in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program
*Reforms to the Visa Waiver Program that could facilitate Korea's inclusion in it were passed by Congress and signed by the President on August 8, 2007. The Chamber and Council will monitor the implementation of this legislation.
