Public health issues are among the most important challenges our society faces. This forum will explore the importance of advancements in life sciences and biomedical research to America's health. It will include a discussion of the forthcoming white paper, Measuring Biomedical Progress, authored by Dr. Scott Gottlieb, resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and co-sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Additionally, the U.S. Chamber and the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation have partnered to present the inaugural Life Sciences Awards. The Life Sciences Awards will recognize individuals that have shown exemplary work in the life sciences field.

• $25,000 Chairmen's Distinguished Life Sciences Award—presented to anadult scientist/researcher working in the field of life sciences.
  - Dr. Christine E. Schmidt
  Laurence E. McMakin Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin
  
•  $10,000 Life Sciences Educator Award—presented to a current secondary school educator promoting the study of life sciences.
  - Dr. Paul A. Cammer
  Director, Neuroscience Research Laboratory, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Alexandria, VA
  
• $5,000 Biology Student Award—presented to a current secondary student making contributions to the study of biology.
  - Stori Jensen
  Recent graduate, Brighton High School, Salt Lake City, UT
  
• $5,000 Chemistry Student Award—presented to a current secondary student making contributions to the study of chemistry.
  - Peter Kamel
