Recent Emerging Issues Discussions

Through a regular series of intimate gatherings, the National Chamber Foundation assembles a select group of national leaders to examine emerging issues that can affect business competitiveness. 

Past discussions include:

  • White House Fellows Dinner Class of 2008-2009 (November 13, 2008)
    U.S. Chamber senior staff and White House Fellows gathered at the Chamber to discuss several topics, including opportunities for public private partnerships, alternative energy, and the relationship between business and education.
  • Cybersecurity: The Increased Necessity of Information Security on the Internet (March 13, 2008)
    With the competitiveness of global markets at an all-time high, increased cyber security measures among industries in the United States are necessary to maintain our competitive edge.  This discussion examined where we are most vulnerable and steps to better protect ourselves. 
  • The Declining Dollar and the Global Economy (March 13, 2008)
    NCF brought together a group of economists to discuss the reasons behind the depreciation of the U.S. dollar and the implications it may have on the global economy. Listen to the audio cast here.
  • The Role of State and Federal Governments in Providing Disaster Insurance (December 3, 2007)
    NCF hosted a discussion that brought together reinsurers, insurers, environmentalists, academia, think tanks, and others in the business community impacted by changes in the insurance market.
  • White House Fellows Class of 2007-2008 (November 26, 2007)
    U.S. Chamber senior staff and White House Fellows gathered at the Chamber last November to launch a new partnership to identify emerging business issues and build awareness of those issues throughout the federal government.
  • Dr. Elias Zerhouni, Director, National Institutes of Health (November 19, 2007)
    Dr. Zerhouni came to the Chamber for a "thought leader" meeting to talk about how biomedical research will impact medicine in the future and its implications for health care, which will be more predictive, personalized, preemptive, and participatory.
  • Corporate Taxation in America  (October 23, 2007)
    NCF hosted a luncheon to address the state of corporate tax in America and to determine how the business community can make progress on the tax issue in a tough political environment. 
  • Economic "Perfect Storm" Scenario  (September 6, 2007)
    NCF hosted a dinner with leading economists and representatives from the academic, think tank, private equity, and corporate communities, to talk about the elements of an economic "perfect storm" scenario that could occur in the next six years. 
  • DC Political and Media Consultants (June 27)
    NCF hosted a discussion with local political and media consultants to explore how events such as a terrorist attack, a credit "meltdown," or a large scale privacy invasion could lead to the development or increased visibility of issues on the national scene.  
  • Business School Deans  (June 12, 2007)
    NCF hosted a dinner with the deans of six business schools to discuss emerging issues and cooperation between the business and academic communities.
