There is no dispute that the immigration system is broken and comprehensive immigration reform is desperately needed. Any type of comprehensive immigration reform needs to address the status of undocumented workers who are already working here and thereby contributing to keeping our economy strong. The reality is that the U.S. is not going to deport 5% of its workforce. It is better for the security and economic wellbeing of this country to provide a mechanism to bring these workers out of the shadows. Also, it is important to address the need for employers to fill jobs that Americans are either unwilling or unavailable to take. Any guest worker program should take into account the fact that employers will need and want some of these workers to stay permanently. Stronger and smarter enforcement of our immigration laws, including at the borders, will be facilitated with our proposed comprehensive
immigration reform package. The right time is here for the Administration and Congress to tackle these difficult issues and move forward with solutions that are both good for America and good business.
