The U.S. Chamber of Commerce urges Congress to extend the U.S. Generalized System of Preferences trade program beyond its December 31 expiration. G-S-P as the trade program is known, extends duty free treatment to select imports. For more than three decades, the G-S-P has boosted the competitiveness of American manufacturers -- and lowered the cost of consumer goods for American families. The products that come in under GSP do not compete with U.S. made goods in any significant way. Congress should remember the Hippocratic Oath-first do no harm-and extend the GSP trade program.
