State and local attempts to regulate the employment of undocumented workers are unconstitutional and preempted by federal law. A federal court recently struck down an immigration ordinance in Hazleton, Pennsylvania because it violated employer's due process rights. The court correctly ruled that immigration is a national issue. Arizona's immigration statute also deserves to be overturned, just like Hazleton's. States and localities must be stopped from undermining well-established federal law regulating employment of immigrants in the United States, creating a patchwork of inconsistent requirements will have a negative effect on the U.S. economy. What is happening in Pennsylvania and Arizona should send a message to other local governments that piecemeal immigration laws are not the answer and to Congress that the nation needs comprehensive immigration reform.
