U.S. Chamber Expands Presence on Capitol Hill Row House Purchase Completed, Renovation to Start
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States Chamber of Commerce announced it has purchased a row house on Capitol Hill for $1.9 million to expand its base for lobbying and outreach.
“We are already neighbors with the White House on Lafayette Park – now we’ll be in Congress’ backyard as well,” said Chamber Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Suzanne Clark. “This purchase will make it easier for us to conduct our advocacy work on the Hill and represents another asset in our arsenal.”
The Victorian-style, attached townhouse, located at 419 New Jersey Avenue, S.E., was built around 1890 and is three blocks from the House side of Capitol Hill. The five-story, brick building will require significant renovation to restore it to its original design and condition. Work is not expected to be completed until fall 2006.
Expanding the Chamber’s physical presence on the Hill will aid its 15 full-time lobbyists and more than 60 policy experts who work with Congress to ensure legislation will promote businesses’ interests in economic growth and prosperity. In addition to office space, the new building will be used for meetings and events.
The Chamber’s headquarters, located at 1615 H Street, N.W., was built in 1922 on the original site of Daniel Webster’s home. The Chamber’s library is now home to Daniel Webster’s desk.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing more than three million businesses and organizations of every size, sector and region.
