Chamber Urges U.S. House of Representatives to Take Up Bills Aimed at Curbing Lawsuit Abuse

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform (ILR) today urged the U.S. House of Representatives to quickly take up three vital pieces of legal reform legislation that were reported out of the House Judiciary Committee today.

"Lawsuit abuse is crippling employers, stifling job growth and driving up the cost of everything we buy," said ILR president Lisa Rickard.  "We applaud the members of the Judiciary Committee for their hard work, and call upon the full House of Representatives to quickly consider these bills that will help restore basic fairness to our nation's legal system."

The House Judiciary Committee sent to the full House H.R. 554, the Personal Responsibility in Food Consumption Act, H.R. 800, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act and H.R. 420, the Lawsuit Abuse Reduction Act.  Information on the legislation is available online (http://www.instituteforlegalreform.com/).

The mission of the Institute for Legal Reform is to make America's legal system simpler, fairer and faster for everyone. It seeks to promote civil justice reform through legislative, political, judicial and educational activities at the national, state and local levels.  The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business federation, representing more than three million businesses and organizations of every size, sector and region.
