Nationwide Poll of Seniors Shows High Level of Satisfaction
With Medicare Prescription Drug Plan

WASHINGTON, DC—A large majority of seniors (84%) enrolled in the Medicare prescription drug program are satisfied with their drug coverage and a majority (52%) say they are enjoying a significant cost savings, according to a new study released today by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

“The Medicare prescription drug program is both popular and effective, especially among the 30 million seniors who have already signed up,” said Bruce Josten, Chamber executive vice president for government affairs. “Seniors are able to choose a plan that meets their needs and it’s working.”

The poll, conducted by The Tarrance Group, asked 970 registered voters over the age of 65 a variety of questions about their prescription drug coverage, their experience signing up for the new benefit, and satisfaction with their coverage. Among those who enrolled themselves in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, a majority believes it was worth it given the benefits they have received or seen their friends or relatives receive.

Among the highlights:

• 91% say their plan is convenient to use at their pharmacy;
• 90% say they understand how their plan works and how to use it;
• 85% say their monthly premium and co-payments are affordable;
• 85% say their plan covers the medicines they need;
• 77% say they would recommend their plan to others;,
• 78% say they are happy with the amount of coverage they have; and,
• 56% say they are paying $30 or less per month for prescription drug coverage.

The Chamber strongly supported passage of The Medicare Modernization Act in 2003 and is a member of the Medicare Rx Education Network, a coalition of more than 40 national organizations dedicated to coordinating activities, sharing resources, and disseminating consistent information about the new Medicare prescription drug coverage to America’s seniors and disabled citizens.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation, representing more than 3 million businesses and organizations of every size, sector, and region.
