U.S. Chamber Names Deputy Secretary of Labor Steven J. Law Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel
 
WASHINGTON, DC—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has named former U.S. Department of Labor Deputy Secretary Steven J. Law as its chief legal officer and general counsel.

 

“Law has an ideal mix of leadership, legal, and public policy experience to manage the Chamber’s legal affairs and pursue legal initiatives on behalf of the broader business community,” said U.S. Chamber President and CEO Tom Donohue.

 

Law will be responsible for ensuring the Chamber’s compliance with all applicable laws and regulations and will represent the organization in legal disputes. He will also oversee the National Chamber Litigation Center, an incorporated public policy law firm associated with the U.S. Chamber that represents business on a wide range of issues before the courts and federal regulatory agencies.

 

“Overreaching state regulation, unreasonable federal regulations, and special interest shareholder activism have created a legal minefield for business,” Law said. “The U.S. Chamber is on the front lines defending law-abiding businesses from these anti-competitive excesses.”

 

Law spent the last six years at the U.S. Department of Labor, serving as deputy secretary and chief of staff. During his tenure, the department made historic changes to its overtime rules, required unions to adopt new financial transparency standards, and successfully intervened in the West Coast ports’ shutdown of 2002. Law also drove management initiatives at the department that earned it the number-one ranking by OMB for management excellence. Before that, he was executive director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee for two election cycles and chief of staff for six years to Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

 

Law holds a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and a B.A. cum laude from the University of California at Davis. He is a member of the bars of the U.S. Supreme Court, the District of Columbia, and New York State.

 

Law will assume his new responsibilities in mid-February following the departure of Stephen Bokat, who is stepping down after a 30-year career at the Chamber. Bokat will continue on a part-time basis as a consultant.
