WASHINGTON, D.C.-The National Chamber Litigation Center (NCLC) entered and won a record number of cases on behalf of the business community in 2006.

 

"For six straight years NCLC has set new litigation records on behalf of the American business community," said Robin Conrad, NCLC senior vice president. "We intend to continue this winning streak in 2007 as the Litigation Center celebrates its 30th year of advancing business interests in the courts."             

 

The Litigation Center entered a total of 106 new cases in 2006, breaking 2005's record of 85. The Center also surpassed its all-time record of 43 victories set in 2005 by achieving 47 victories in 2006. 

 

NCLC's 2006 victories included Chamber of Commerce of the United States of America v. U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), striking down the SEC's proposed rules governing mutual fund boards of directors on procedural grounds; and Chamber of Commerce of the United States v. Lockyer, overturning California's advertising fax ban on federal preemption grounds. NCLC's 2006 cases addressed a wide variety of important business issues, from punitive damages, class actions, securities litigation, and federal preemption of state law.

 

Founded in 1977, NCLC has championed the principles of private enterprise in 1,000 cases. NCLC's four-pronged legal strategy consists of initiating suits to challenge unfair statutes and regulations, filing friend-of-the-court (amicus curiae) briefs in cases of major significance to the business community, hosting moot courts in landmark cases, and providing a reasoned voice for business in the media.
