Louisville to Receive Competitiveness Award from U.S. Chamber’s Institute for a Competitive Workforce

Establishing New Education and Training Systems Sets City Apart

WASHINGTON, D.C.–-The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for a Competitive Workforce (ICW) today announced that Louisville, KY will receive the 2008 Community Competitiveness Award for establishing a public-private partnership that advances the region’s global competitiveness.

“As a regional chamber, Louisville demonstrated the leadership to construct top-notch public education and training systems,” said Arthur J. Rothkopf, senior vice president of the U.S. Chamber. “A major factor in our decision was the efforts put forth in the region by Greater Louisville Inc.—The Metro Chamber of Commerce.

“We were impressed with the creation of the HIRE Education Forum, which has helped bring the postsecondary community together to address the region’s need to increase college graduation rates,” he said. “The number of higher education institutions, the longevity of the project, and the successes that HIRE has seen are truly remarkable.”

Louisville was chosen from 16 applicants. To be considered for the award, communities must engagement in:

Promoting public and private sector cooperation in education and workforce development that leads to sustainable outcomes.
Enhancing the communities in which employees learn, work, and live.
Building relationships with multiple stakeholders.
Taking a proactive role in regional education, workforce and economic development issues.

Louisville will be honored for their achievement on October 21 during ICW’s annual Education and Workforce Summit in Philadelphia.

ICW is a non-profit, non-partisan, 501(c)3 affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, promoting the rigorous educational standards and effective job training systems needed to preserve the strength of America’s greatest economic resource, its workforce.
